Local Author's Visit
Local author, L. Stewart Marsden, visited our youngest readers in kindergarten and first grade on Wednesday, December 17th. The students were so excited to have a "real" author visit, and they certainly enjoyed his reading of his first children's book, Stinky and the Night Mare. Mr. Marsden graciously donated a copy of his book to each of our kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Thank you, Mr. Marsden, for making time to visit our South Newton leader readers and for the wonderful gift of books!

Super Spellers
Congratulations to our 2014-2015 Spelling Bee Champion, Maleec Wilson! Maleec is a 3rd grade student in Mrs. Hayes' class. He and four others will be our "Fab Five" representing South Newton at the NCCS District Spelling Bee on January 23rd. Congratulations to Maleec, Hailey Greene, Fatima Errami, Joseph Silcox, and Selina Rice! We are proud of all of you!
STATE Champs
Congratulations to the men's soccer team and their coaches at Newton-Conover High School for winning the State Championship! Our very own Coach "P" is a coach of that winning team! Coach P brought the trophy to South Newton to show the students and to reinforce Leader in Me Habit #2 - Begin With the End in Mind. Coach P's lesson was about setting goals and working hard every day to meet those goals. That's what the NCHS soccer players did to secure the state championship, and that's what our South Newton Tigers need to do to be successful on the EOGs and in other areas of life.

Hard work and dedication always pays off BIG time! Red Devil Pride!
Seed Survivor

Seed Survivor is a free curriculum-based program that teaches elementary children about plants and the importance of agriculture. Multiple displays travel across North America year-round. Last year Seed Survivor planted over 110,000 sunflower seeds with participants and visited 16 states and provinces. Seed Survivor was designed to teach youth that plants need water, light, healthy soil, and nutrients to survive. South Newton 3rd and 4th grade students participated in this awesome interactive exhibit.

Readers Are Leaders

Mrs. Styers’ kindergarten class has been learning about leadership through a book called Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. Check out their blog post here!

New Playground
South Newton students and staff began the week with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground. Watch the video below to see our student and staff leaders explain "the right way" to use the equipment.

Leader in Me
The Leader in Me is a school-wide model based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Happy Kids. This model promotes a school culture built on leadership and community. The goal is to create a learning environment focused on the whole individual and his or her place in the classroom and in the community at large.

South Newton is just beginning the first year of implementation. Faculty and staff attended four intensive days of training during the summer of 2014 in preparation for school-wide deployment in the 2014-2015 school year. Everyone is eager to model and to teach the 7 Habits to each and every child in our school family! Stay tuned on our progress by clicking on the page link on the left.
