Jump Rope for Heart
The week of February 9 - February 13 is Jump Rope for Heart week at South Newton Elementary. Students will be participating in the Jump Rope for Heart during their regular scheduled physical education classes this week. Students will be playing jump rope games and participating in contests to raise awareness of heart disease. Students will also have the option of donating to the American Heart Association. All donations must be turned in to South Newton by March 6.

Sharpening the Saw
All of the "big" kids at South Newton recently participated in a Leader in Me reflection activity as well as a team-building activity to Sharpen the Saw - one of our 7 Habits. Everyone had a great time! Guess which teacher brought her own bowling ball??????

Dressed to Impress!
South Newton Tigers dressed to impress on Friday, January 23 to celebrate the completion of Unity Week!  Each day had a theme to promote kindness, and Friday’s theme was “Be a Role Model—Be Kind to Others.”  Students and staff had a great time participating in each day’s theme and showing support and unity for the school!

Famous Author Visit

Children's author and illustrator, Jarrett Krosoczka, visited South Newton 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders on Friday, January 9th. Students enjoyed hearing about how he became a writer and illustrator. He also shared his story about persevering while dealing with initial rejections in the competitive publishing world, and he left students and staff with the powerful message to never give up. Keep doing what you love, and you will succeed! Jarrett was an inspiration to all of us! Krosoczka is the well-known author of the graphic novel series, Lunch Lady, as well as many other popular children's books. The real Lunch Ladies of South Newton joined in the fun as well.
Leader in Me
The Leader in Me is a school-wide model based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Happy Kids. This model promotes a school culture built on leadership and community. The goal is to create a learning environment focused on the whole individual and his or her place in the classroom and in the community at large.

South Newton is just beginning the first year of implementation. Faculty and staff attended four intensive days of training during the summer of 2014 in preparation for school-wide deployment in the 2014-2015 school year. Everyone is eager to model and to teach the 7 Habits to each and every child in our school family! Stay tuned on our progress by clicking on the page link on the left.
